Caliban

I mean, who better than a tall clumsy transwoman to play Caliban, right? I know what it's like to live inside a rock, although for me, that rock used to go everywhere I did. Caliban can come and go from his rock, and I am distancing myself from mine. But whenever Caliban tries to distance himself from his rock, all of Prospero's spells call at him maddeningly, demanding that he serve. I've never been a slave, and none of my ancestors were slaves, I think. But I do know a sort of "mental slavery" like a prophet once sang of. I know internalized oppression. Who better? Lots of people, probably. There are a thousand Calibans. In this show that we are doing, I will play two of them. And both of them will also be me. -Y.Q. This summer, I'll be doing an intensive comparative study of four books: two doctrinal (Catechism of the Catholic Church and Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah), one religious literature (Rumi's Say I Am You), and one religious criticism (Peter L. Berger's The Sacred Canopy). The end result of this study will be an essay that outlines my understanding of the function of religion in a postmodern world. This essay will serve as a literary prologue to my Christological performance piece, "Worde". I will also be continuing my study of Biblical Hebrew. (And even though I'm not technically "studying" it, I am picking up a good deal of Klingon working on this Shakespeare stuff) Onwards and upwards, out of our caves and into learning. Y.Q.

Summer 2012: Shakespeare in Space! in the Park

This Sunday, June 3, the company members of Shakespeare in Space! in the Park will be holding an open workshop on Warrior Movement in the bandshell of Moraga Commons from 6 to 8 p.m. If the space is already taken, they will move to another place in the park. This workshop is the kick-off of the company's inaugural project, a complete staging of the Klingon translation of "Hamlet", to be performed later this summer in one or more parks, locations TBD. Anyone with any level of previous movement training is welcome to join the company for the workshop. Applications for joining the production of "Hamlet" will also be available. Pass the word on. "One" at the BASH 2012

Saint Mary's College student actors will perform Yancy Q's "One act play with song",
also known by its shortened name "One",
this Thursday evening at 6
in the Soda Center
as part of the BASH 2012.

This is Saint Mary's College's LGBTQIA cultural night.
Put on by leaders of the college Gay-Straight Alliance,
by talented performers who have graced many a stage,
and by brave voices who are just speaking up for the first time.

This is Yancy's third BASH.
In 2009 it directed and played Jesus in "Prop 8: The Musical"
In 2010 it edited and directed the 'Glee'-themed musical number.
This is Yancy's first time writing an original piece.
"One" is group directed by its cast,
which includes first year SMC actors Jennifer O'Brien and Ollie Reyes.
Jaclyn Magbitang will sing the song.

It's gonna be fun.

Finishing Touches

I started the theatre project that we're now calling "Worde" in the summer of 2010. Two scenes were performed at Saint Mary's College in the spring of 2011, and now, in the winter of 2012, it's all coming to fruition.

This play is an homage to the religious origin of Western theatre. The seven scenes are based on the Corpus Christi cycle plays of medieval Europe. They are simple and poetic, and each one contains a strong moral message (or two). The story is a profile of Jesus Christ and his disciples, and the play is a study of how Christ consciousness permeates Modern social and economic systems in the USA and abroad.

This is my project for 2012. The first draft of the text is almost complete, and workshops will begin around the East Bay at the end of January and the beginning of February.

My goal is to have it ready for production by Easter, with an updated draft ready for production by Christmas.

Stay tuned, neighbors. This one will be performed in our own street.
